The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign stands as an iconic symbol of the city’s vibrant history and culture. Designed by Betty Willis and erected in 1959, the sign sits at the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, USA. Its distinctive diamond shape, adorned with blinking lights and bold typography, captures the essence of Las Vegas’s glitz and glamour.

Commissioned by local businessman Ted Rogich, the sign was intended to create an inviting gateway to the city for visitors arriving via the highway from California. The words “Welcome” and “Las Vegas” are displayed prominently, with “Welcome” arched across the top and “Las Vegas” spanning the bottom. In the middle, the word “Fabulous” flashes in alternating patterns, giving the sign its characteristic dynamic appeal.

The choice of design elements was deliberate and strategic. The bright neon lights that outline the letters contribute to the sign’s eye-catching allure, while the starbursts and bursts of color evoke the excitement and entertainment that Las Vegas represents. The color palette, dominated by red, blue, and yellow, further emphasizes the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the city.

Over the decades, the sign has become more than just a marker; it’s a cultural landmark and a symbol of Las Vegas’s transformation from a desert oasis to an internationally renowned entertainment destination. The sign has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and commercials, further cementing its status as an enduring piece of American pop culture.

In 2009, the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural significance and historical value. Despite the evolving landscape of the Las Vegas Strip, the sign remains a constant reminder of the city’s allure, drawing in visitors from around the world who seek to experience the excitement and extravagance that Las Vegas has to offer.
